FAQs
Grounding Basics
What is Grounding?
Grounding, also known as earthing, is the practice of connecting the body to the earth’s natural energy through direct or indirect contact. Traditionally, grounding is done by walking barefoot outside on natural surfaces such as grass, soil, sand, or unpainted concrete.
Today, many people use grounding mats and earthing products to practice grounding indoors while sleeping, relaxing, meditating, or working. Indoor grounding products are designed to bring the convenience of grounding into modern everyday life.
Many grounding enthusiasts include grounding as part of a daily wellness routine to support relaxation, better sleep habits, stress management, and overall comfort.
What is the technology behind Grounding products?
Grounding products of EarthGrounding use conductive materials designed to connect the body to the earth’s natural energy through a properly grounded outlet or grounding rod. Products such as grounding mats, grounding sheets, and earthing pillowcases contain conductive elements like carbon or silver threads that allow the grounding connection to pass through the surface when in direct skin contact.
Grounding products do not use electricity or generate electrical current. Instead, they simply connect to the grounding portion of a grounded outlet, similar to the grounding system already built into modern homes.
Many people use grounding and earthing products indoors to conveniently practice grounding while sleeping, relaxing, meditating, or working throughout the day.
Can grounding help support neuropathy symptoms?
While research on grounding for neuropathy is still limited, many people explore grounding mats and earthing products as part of their daily wellness routine to support relaxation, circulation, and overall comfort.
Here are some reasons why grounding is often discussed in connection with neuropathy support:
1. Grounding may help support healthy circulation
Neuropathy, especially diabetic neuropathy, is often associated with reduced circulation and nerve discomfort in the hands and feet. Some grounding studies suggest grounding may help support blood flow, which is why many people use grounding mats for foot comfort and relaxation.
2. Grounding is commonly associated with inflammation support
Some grounding researchers believe grounding may help the body maintain balance against oxidative stress and inflammation. Because inflammation is often linked to chronic discomfort and nerve sensitivity, many people include grounding as part of their long-term wellness habits.
3. Many users report grounding for chronic pain and nerve discomfort
People experiencing nerve discomfort, tingling sensations, or chronic pain often use grounding mats while sleeping or relaxing to help create a more calming and comfortable environment.
4. Grounding may promote relaxation and stress relief
Stress can sometimes worsen feelings of discomfort and tension in the body. Many grounding users report that grounding helps support relaxation, calmer moods, and improved nighttime routines.
5. Better sleep may support overall recovery and comfort
Quality sleep plays an important role in overall wellness and recovery. Some users find that grounding mats for sleep help create a more restful sleep environment and support nighttime relaxation.

Can grounding help support lymphedema symptoms?
While research on grounding for lymphedema is still limited, many people use grounding mats and earthing products as part of their daily wellness routine to support relaxation, circulation, and overall comfort.
Lymphedema is commonly associated with swelling, fluid buildup, heaviness, and discomfort, especially in the arms and legs. Some grounding users believe grounding may help support the body’s natural recovery processes by encouraging relaxation and promoting healthy circulation.
Many people with chronic swelling or discomfort use grounding mats:
- while sleeping
- during relaxation
- at a desk
- while elevating the legs
- as part of calming nighttime routines
Some grounding enthusiasts also report that grounding helps support:
- stress reduction
- better sleep quality
- relaxation after long days
- overall comfort and recovery routines
Because stress and poor sleep can sometimes worsen physical discomfort, many people include grounding as part of a broader wellness-focused lifestyle.

General Product Questions
How do I test my EarthGrounding™ grounding mat or sheet?
To test whether your EarthGrounding™ grounding mat or grounding sheet is working properly, you can use a multimeter or body voltage meter, which is commonly available from hardware or electronics stores.
These devices measure body voltage before and after touching the grounding product. When the grounding mat or earthing sheet is connected correctly to a properly grounded outlet, many users will notice a reduction in body voltage while maintaining direct skin contact with the product.
Do grounding products emit EMFs or magnetic fields?
No. Grounding products such as grounding mats, grounding sheets, and earthing pillowcases do not generate or emit EMFs, electrical current, or magnetic fields because they do not use live electricity.
Grounding products simply connect to the grounding portion of a properly grounded outlet or grounding rod, allowing connection to the earth’s natural energy without powering the product itself.
Many people choose grounding and earthing products as a simple wellness practice for relaxation, sleep, and everyday comfort without adding active electrical devices to their environment.
Why can’t I detect continuity in my grounding cord?
In most cases, this is related to how the multimeter measures continuity rather than a problem with the grounding cord itself.
EarthGrounding™ grounding cords include a built-in safety resistor designed to help protect users while still allowing grounding products to function properly. Because of this built-in resistance, some standard multimeter continuity tests may not detect the cord as a fully closed circuit.
Many multimeters use a low-resistance threshold during continuity testing, which may not accurately measure grounding cords that contain higher resistance safety components. This is normal for many grounding mats, grounding sheets, and earthing products designed for everyday use.
To properly test your grounding product, we recommend using:
- a resistance measurement setting on your multimeter
- a body voltage meter
- or the outlet tester included with many grounding products
Always ensure your grounding mat or grounding sheet is connected to a properly grounded outlet before testing.
I live in an apartment—can I still use a grounding mat?
Yes. All EarthGrounding™ grounding products are fully functional in apartments, condos, and high-rise buildings. Regardless of floor level, a properly grounded outlet will still maintain connection to the building’s grounding system.
Will grounding products interfere with my pacemaker or metal implants?
There is currently no evidence showing that grounding mats or earthing products interfere with pacemakers or metal implants. Grounding is generally similar to walking barefoot outside on natural surfaces such as grass or soil.
EarthGrounding™ grounding products do not use live electricity and connect only to the grounding portion of a properly grounded outlet.
Many people with pacemakers or metal implants use grounding products without issue. However, because every medical situation is different, we always recommend consulting your doctor or healthcare provider before starting grounding or using grounding products if you have:
- a pacemaker
- metal implants
- medical devices
- circulation concerns
- or are taking blood-thinning medications
Grounding products are designed to support wellness, relaxation, and daily grounding routines and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
How do I clean and take care of the mat?
Gently wipe the surface with a damp cloth. Avoid harsh chemicals or submerging it in water. Do not fold or bend the mat sharply. Always unplug before cleaning.
Can pets use the grounding mat?
Yes! Pets often naturally seek out grounding mats because they can feel the calming effect. It may help with anxiety, inflammation, and joint discomfort in older animals.
How long should I use the mat daily?
Even just 30 minutes a day can offer noticeable benefits. But the longer, the better. Many users ground for hours daily—especially while sleeping or working.
Can I use the mat while working, sleeping, or relaxing?
Absolutely. Our mats are designed for flexible use:
- Under your desk while working
- On your bed while sleeping
- During yoga or meditation
- For pets resting on the floor
How do I test if my grounding mat is working?
You can easily test your mat using a continuity tester or multimeter (can be purchased from any hardware store):
Option 1: With a Continuity Tester
- Plug the grounding cord into a grounded outlet.
- Attach the tester to the mat surface.
- If the light on the tester turns green, your mat is properly grounded and working.
Option 2: With a Multimeter
- Set the multimeter to measure voltage (AC).
- Hold one probe while touching the mat with the other.
- If your body voltage drops when touching the mat, it's working correctly.
Tip: Make sure you're testing in bare skin contact and the outlet is properly grounded.
How long will the grounding mat last?
With proper care, your grounding mat can last up to 3 to 5 years or more.
Can I wear socks while using the grounding mat?
Yes, but bare skin contact is best for maximum effectiveness.
Thin, natural-fiber socks (like cotton or bamboo) may still allow some grounding effect, though it will be less direct. Thick or synthetic socks (like polyester) can block conductivity.
For best results, place your bare feet, hands, or skin directly on the mat.
